Worried about the spread of Coronavirus, the global wine event ProWein has postponed its 2020 event by an entire year.
Previously the organization had simply said it would postpone the expo, set for mid-March in Düsseldorf, Germany. Today, the organizing company Messe Düsseldorf GmbH clarified that its next ProWein will take place Sunday, March 21, to Tuesday, March 23, in 2021.
“We have taken this decision in in-depth dialogue with our partner associations and key players in the industry,” says Erhard Wienkamp, managing director at Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. “The special challenge here was there is only a very tight ‘trade fair window’ open for the wine industry – one which is additionally narrowed down by the insecure situation created by the Coronavirus.”
“Against this background the decision is the only correct conclusion to be drawn – all in the interest of the wine and spirits industry,” Wienkamp adds.
The German Wine Institute (DWI), a conceptual sponsor of ProWein, supports the decision.
“We expressly welcome that Messe Düsseldorf was courageous enough to take this step, which is entirely in the interest of the wine industry,” says Monika Reule, managing director at DWI. “Weighing all the benefits and drawbacks Messe Düsseldorf has reacted in a considerate, prudent and right way to our mind.”
Existing contracts between Messe Düsseldorf and the exhibitors will remain valid for the alternative dates. The same applies to already purchased visitor tickets.

“ProWein goes city,” the joint initiative of the Destination Düsseldorf trade association and Messe Düsseldorf, will also follow this postponement into 2021.
Also postponed due to the Coronavirus was ProWine 2020 in Singapore, which will now be held from July 13 – 16, 2020 concurrently with FHA-HoReCa.
ProWein World also includes ProWine in Sao Paulo (October 20 – 22, 2020), ProWine in Shanghai (November 10 -12, 2020) and ProWine in Hong Kong (May 18 – 21, 2021).
