May 2021 U.S. OPE Dealer Sales Drop 4% Overall, But Service Numbers Remain Positive

U.S. OPE dealerships in most regions of the country saw a decrease in overall sales in May, according to data from Constellation Data Solutions. When compared to May 2020, same store sales results in May 2021 showed a 4-percent decrease in overall sales. Canadian dealerships saw an 8-percent decrease in overall sales in May.

The data is pulled from more than 1,200 OPE dealerships that use Constellation’s Ideal and c-Systems and Charter DMS products; the composite data compares same store sales stats from May 2021 versus May 2020. Constellation Data Solutions collects the data and provides it exclusively for readers of OPE Business.

Only the Northeast region saw an increase in overall sales in May versus the previous year:

  • Northeast dealers reported an 11-percent growth in overall sales in May 2021 vs. April 2020;
  • South region dealers reported a 4-percent decrease in overall sales in May;
  • Midwest region dealers reported a 7-percent decrease in overall sales in May; and
  • West region dealers reported a 19-percent decrease in overall sales in May.

Service sales were positive in every U.S. region, averaging a 35-percent increase across the country in May 2021 vs. May 2020. Canadian dealers reported a 42-percent increase for the same period.

In the U.S., only the Northeast region reported an increase in wholegoods sales (up 11 percent) and parts sales (up 6 percent) for May 2021. Canada also reported an increase (4 percent) in parts sales.

States in each region are as follows:

Midwest: Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota and Wisconsin

Northeast: Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Vermont

South: Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington DC

West: Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming
