SGWS Announces Commercial Promotions

Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits has appointed Scott Oppenheimer as President of East Region, and Mark Chaplin as Vice President, Sales & Marketing.

Both appointments are effective January 1, 2020.

Oppenheimer will report to John Wittig, who will be assuming the role of Chief Commercial Officer, effective January 1, 2020. Mark Chaplin will report to Gene Sullivan, who will be assuming the role of Chief Sales & Marketing Officer, also effective January 1, 2020.

In his role as President for the East Region, Oppenheimer will lead the company’s operations in eight Eastern U.S. markets and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

“I know few more disciplined, consummate professionals than Scott,” says Wittig. “In his over three years with Southern Glazer’s, he has elevated the performance of our Control States and Canada division markedly—building a world-class team and operation.”

Oppenheimer currently holds the role of Regional President for the Control States and Canada, which he has held since mid-2016. Prior to joining Southern Glazer’s, he held numerous sales, marketing and leadership roles throughout a long career in the beverage alcohol industry, including serving as Senior Vice President, Control States and Military for Moet Hennessy USA.

An appointment regarding future leadership of the Control States and Canada will be announced in December.

In his new role as Vice President, Sales & Marketing, Chaplin will report directly to the Chief Sales & Marketing Officer—supporting sales execution excellence, working with strategic supplier and customer partners, and helping implement the Embed, Embrace and Execute (E3) strategy throughout the Company.

“Mark will be my right hand in this new role,” says Sullivan. “Essentially, he will serve as my ‘chief of staff ’— supporting all of my key, day-to-day responsibilities as I assume the Chief Sales & Marketing Officer role. I have worked closely with Mark in the East Region and have been impressed with his intelligence, drive and collaborative approach—qualities that will no doubt make him successful in this new role.”

Chaplin will work with the company’s dedicated supplier divisions, the Supplier Management and Business Development (SMBD) group, and National Accounts — along with the Regional Presidents — aligning their actions and communications to the company’s and trading partners’ goals.

Chaplin currently holds the role of Director of Sales and Commercial Operations for the East Region. Prior to that appointment, he worked in the East Region Commercial Strategy group, where he contributed to various strategic initiatives, including route-to-market restructuring and commercial operations designs.

Chaplin’s work experience prior to Southern Glazer’s includes positions with Gallo Sales Company, Merrill Lynch, Grant Thornton and Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. He Chaplin earned his Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Miami in 017.
