Ken Block, rally driver, dies at 55

Pro rally driver Ken Block was killed in a snowmobile accident on Monday, Jan. 2, southeast of Park City, Utah, local authorities confirmed.

55-year-old Block was a co-founder of DC shoes before entering the world of rally car racing, where his talent and creativity made him one of the sport’s most popular drivers. Block’s Hoonigan Racing brand and Gymkhana video series forever changed competitive driving.

The Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office in Utah confirmed on Facebook that Block died at approximately 2 p.m. on Jan. 2 in the Mill Hollow area near Woodland, Utah. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Block was snowmobiling “on a steep slope when the snowmobile upended, landing on top of him.” He was pronounced dead at the scene. Block had been riding with a group but was alone when the accident occurred.

“It’s with our deepest regrets that we can confirm that Ken Block passed away in a snowmobile accident today,” said a statement on @thehoonigans Instagram page. “Ken was a visionary, a pioneer and an icon. And most importantly, a father and husband. He will be incredibly missed.”

Block co-founded the skateboard brand DC Shoes in 1984 and sold the company in 2004, In a short time, he became a leader in World Rally and Rally America, and was a five-time X Games medalist in RallyCross.

Block was a powersports enthusiast, driving UTVs and snowmobiles near his home in Park City, Utah. He is survived by his wife, Lucy, and three children.
