Report: Canada’s Capital Will Begin Phase-Out of Gas-Powered OPE this Summer

The city of Ottawa, Ontario, the capital of Canada, will begin phasing out gas-powered outdoor power equipment this summer, according to CTV News Ottawa.

The Ottawa phase-out follows the announcement in December 2021 by Canada’s National Capital Commission that it will ban the use of gas-powered leaf blowers, line trimmers, hedge trimmers and small chainsaws on NCC lands beginning in 2023.

CTV News Ottawa notes that the province’s Parks and Forestry and Roads and Parking Services division “will pilot the use of electric equipment and begin testing for suitability” this summer, and has already begun requesting that contractors “include the use of electric equipment in their summer 2022 bids.”
